CREATION

Can you have design without a designer? Have you ever looked at a beautiful painting in an art museum and said, “How many millions of years did it take for all of those colors to appear in all the right places in order to make such a gorgeous scene?”

“That’s ridiculous,” you might say. Of course it is. Now step back and look at the beauties of the universe—which is far more precision and complex than any work of man. Can any intelligent person buy the ridiculous idea that all of these things came together by chance?

  • Did you know that if the orbital speed of earth would slow down by any significant amount, the earth would eventually plunge into the sun? And the inhabitants would perish long before the earth reached the sun. Conversely, if the orbital speed of the earth were to increase, this world would spiral away from the life-supporting sun?
  • Did you know that if just one atom of oxygen failed to be included in the oxygen molecule that we breathe, all air-breathing life forms on earth would die in agony?
  • Did you know that if the axis of the earth were to tip to 45 degrees instead of 23½ degrees, the changing seasons would be so intense that life as we know it on this planet would perish?

These are just a few examples of the narrow gap between extremes that exists in our life-sphere. In itself it very loudly suggests that our world and its people did not evolve from some random events in the cosmos.

There is one more sensible choice for the beginning of the universe and the life forms that fill our local planet. It is God. And He wrote a book for us. His book told the important details of His creative acts and then went on to tell us how we can be accepted by Him and live forever.

Now I know that I cannot disprove evolution or even prove creation. But reason should prevail! You might ask why so many scientists have locked into the theories of evolution and discounted the Bible. I also wonder. Science is supposedly the collection of classified facts. Scientists begin with theories, then test them—over and over again—until they are satisfied that their theories are proven. But when it comes to the origin of all things, they seem to become wide-eyed children in a fairyland of pretense and jump on ideas that are irrational and non-provable. I think they fear the God of the Bible to the extent that they feel obligated to erect a model of origins that leaves God completely out of the picture. That is tragic. To deny the existence of God will not make Him go away. And they will never find a plausible explanation of the beginning of the universe anywhere other than in the Bible. Somewhere, sometime, they will have to face God. Either now, in this life, or (tragically) later, on Judgment Day.

Now I would like to share with you some points to ponder if you haven’t yet decided to believe in the God of Creation.

1. Evolution can be disproved outright by one single word that is universally accepted by scientists.

That word is entropy. There are many ways to define and illustrate the meaning of this word. But in the scientific realm, it is understood to be the ongoing decay of energy in the universe from a higher level to a lower level until all matter/energy in the universe reaches an ultimate state of inert uniformity. Entropy is known to exist in all matter and will eventually bring everything in the universe to stasis and disorder. Scientists have never discovered an instance of reverse entropy taking place! What does that mean? Simply this: In order for a higher level of complexity to emerge, the law of entropy would have to be discarded. Nothing could evolve into a life form from inanimate materials, for instance. With this in mind, any delusions about evolution should be swept away.

2. It is mathematically impossible to line up random events in order to evolve even the simplest life form.

Let me introduce an expert. Sir Fred Hoyle; an English astronomer and mathematician who contributed to the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis. He is well qualified in science and cosmology (the science of the stellar universe and its dynamics)

According to Hoyle's analysis, the probability of cellular life evolving was about one-in-1,040,000. He commented: The chance that higher life forms might have emerged in this way is comparable to the chance that a tornado sweeping through a junkyard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the materials therein. (The above number represents 1 followed by 40,000 zeros. I can’t even come up with a name for that far-fetched number.)

His detractors claimed that he was basing his odds on a one-time event. They, of course, required millions of years for the random events to orchestrate their inputs to bring life into being. I might add that their time requirement would go far beyond the limits of entropy.

The final argument here is that life does not consist of molecular mass, no matter how anyone tries to arrange the atoms. God is the source of life.

3. The very theories of science force the conclusion that the earth is at the center of the physical universe.

This is a tough one, but stay with me. We need to talk about the electromagnetic spectrum[1], visible light, the Doppler Effect and the constant velocity of light. We will not try to swamp you with a lot of high-tech gobble-de-gook. If you finished high school, you should be able to grasp the following concepts. Are you ready? Here we go:

  • The electromagnetic spectrum. All energy sources in the physical universe give off electromagnetic waves. [Note: using Einstein’s energy formula (E=mc^2), it can be shown that all matter contains energy and is therefore an energy source.] These waves travel outward from the source and spread apart. (They are diffused.) Physicists can analyze these waves and determine the nature of the source. For instance, they can tell the chemical composition of distant stars by analyzing the “spectral signature” of the waves coming from that star. All stars are classified into groups, or types. They are O, B, A, F, G, K, M, R, N, S. Astronomy is a fascinating and highly detailed science. I would read a lot more astronomy books if there weren’t so many spiritually blind atheists writing them. Getting a pure education is a challenge these days.
  • Visible light. The study of visible light enters into the discussion of creation and evolution in a very big way! If you have ever looked at a rainbow, you will see all the colors of the visible light spectrum, including every shade or tint of the colors that connect the most commonly-recognized colors. These colors represent different wavelengths of the light frequencies. If you can make a light source vibrate at a certain frequency, you can produce the color that corresponds to that frequency. (The wave length and the frequency are inversely related. For instance, a high frequency color has a shorter wave length than a low frequency color.) Just for your information, there are (at least) two colors that are not visible. They are infrared and ultraviolet. When you use your TV remote control you are using an infrared beam. You can’t see it, but the electronic signal amplifier in the TV set certainly can (It is tuned to that frequency only. Just as Christians should be tuned to the heavenly frequency that is characterized by the Holy Spirit.) Try shining your flashlight into that little black spot on the front of your set and see if the channel changes. Why am I telling you all of this? So that you can be ready for what I’m going to tell you next. Oh, yes, one more thing before we move on. Infrared is just under the low end of the visible light spectrum while ultraviolet is just beyond that spectrum. Remember that. You might be on Jeopardy some day.
  • The Doppler Effect. This phrase has become a household expression in recent years. I need to talk about it so that I can bundle up this discussion and deliver the message that you need to hear. We start with an Austrian physicist and mathematician, Christian Johann Doppler in 1842. He discovered and developed the idea that moving objects which give off light or sound appear to change their outgoing frequencies due to motion. The quick illustration is very common. When you are sitting at the railroad crossing waiting for the train to pass, the train whistle is higher pitched when the train is approaching and lower pitched when the train is moving away from you. What does this have to do with creation? You may ask. Plenty, I would answer. Because now we are going to talk about the visible light spectrum, distant stars, and the inaccurate supposed distance of those stars. Stars that are moving away from us display a red shift in their spectral color signature. Physicists and astronomers have concluded that the physical universe is expanding in all directions away from us. I have no quarrel with that. Also, they say that the further away those stars are, the more red-shifted their light is. Further, the scientists feel that they can ascertain the speed of those receding stars based on their spectral color alone.
  • The constant velocity of light. One of the most rigid concepts in physics is the idea that light (which travels approximately 186,284 miles per second last time I checked) is the absolute speed limit of all matter and energy in the physical universe. According to Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, anything that moves at the speed of light becomes infinitely massive. I won’t even try to explain all of that. Einstein lived in a universe of his own. Yes, he was very intelligent. I will take his word for it. So far as I know it is quite difficult for anything other than light to travel anywhere near the speed of light. Besides, I personally wouldn’t want to travel that fast, because I really like to watch the scenery.

Now we want to take these four concepts and see what we can discover about the conflict between the Bible and evolution theories. And for that matter, other assumed scientific conclusions that the scientific community has accepted without challenge.

I said, above, that the very theories of science force the conclusion that the earth is at the center of the physical universe. I need to qualify that statement. The earth itself is moving in a complex system of circles (orbits, if you please). Not considering the daily rotation, but looking at the revolution of the earth around the sun, and the gradual spin of the stars in our stellar neighborhood around the galactic center. And then adding in whatever motion that our Milky Way Galaxy may be involved in, we can still think of the earth as being relatively motionless in relation to the larger collection of far-flung, uncountable stars, galaxies, and clusters that fill the universe.

Going back to the idea of red-shifted light from distant stars, in every direction away from earth, some very astonishing observations seem to have emerged from the astro-physicists. The velocities of the retreating stars all approach the speed of light as they move away from us. Since this is the speed limit of the universe, we can only conclude that these stars are at the very edge of the physical universe—and as a consequence of that idea, the earth’s system of orbits is at the center of the universe! Let that soak in.

But stick around; there is another “stick” to chew on. Suppose we could demonstrate from scripture that light can move much faster than the sleepy 186,000+ miles per second? We will do that later. If that is possible, then the physical universe may well be infinite! Then what? The universe would continue uninterrupted in all directions. And if that is the case, it really makes no difference if our world is at the center, because our God Himself is infinite and we have immediate access to Him from anywhere. Because, as Jesus said, “I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20)

You may wonder what the preceding argument has to do with evolution versus creation. Here goes: scientists use the red shift information to determine the distance to the faraway stars. Having established in their minds the distance, they then apply the speed, or rate of the light to the simple formula t=d/r. (Time equals distance divided by rate.) They then are able to come up with the monstrously large value for the elapsed time since the origin of the universe. They need a humongous amount of time for all those little stray molecules to find each other and unite to form the earth and life as we know it. What if their measuring stick is wrong? What if God deliberately altered the apparent facts to throw those atheists off the track? Would He do that? Both the Old and New Testaments contain scriptures that demonstrate that God reveals Himself to those who have faith and hides the truth from those who reject Him. Let’s look at Matthew 11:25;

At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

So you may ask: How could God tamper with the evidence to turn the evolutionists’ findings into foolishness? To understand the following section, you must realize that God is not in any way subject to the laws of nature. He created the natural, physical universe and established the rules Himself. And He can, at any time, suspend or alter those rules to suit His purposes. I am going to show you a verse in Genesis that is a key to that mystery.

4. One verse in Genesis Chapter One can be used to discredit the “scientific” conclusion of the extreme age of the universe.

Genesis 1:3; And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

I suggest that you meditate on that verse for a moment.

Remember that God created the electromagnetic spectrum. And the visible light spectrum. Don’t you think that He could shift the spectrum enough to throw confusion into the heads of the evolutionists? To make them think that the distant stars are further away than they really are? Of course He could. Simple. One word from Him would do it.

And if the measuring stick is altered, the conclusions about the extreme age of the universe are incorrect also.

5. The constant velocity of the speed of light is not the ultimate speed limit of energy and mass in the physical universe.

What bearing does this have on the discussion? It is another point which can be seen to demonstrate that the evolutionists are not using a reliable toolbox. Going back to the previous thoughts regarding the apparent edge of the universe that is based on the supposed speed limit of light, we saw that with that assumption, the expanding universe will have, or has already, reached its limit because stars cannot recede any faster than the speed of light. But the Bible says that the stars cannot be numbered. Therefore they are infinite. The universe is infinite. If the universe is infinite, then there are stars in the great distance that have exceeded the speed of light. And this concept is also demonstrated in Genesis 1:3;

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

There was no waiting for the light to appear. It was totally immediate, shattering the speed limit of the universe.

Now there is one more minor difficulty here. It may be argued that the light that was called into existence and appeared in verse three did not come from the sun, the moon, or the stars. That is correct. So we will go to Day Four of Creation:

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. Genesis 1:14-16)

Now, considering the traditional scientific measure of the speed of light, it would have taken 1.282 seconds for moonlight to arrive on earth on Day Four. It would take 8 minutes and 20 seconds for sunlight to arrive. Incidentally, since the moon reflects sunlight, its first light would arrive at about the same time as the sunlight arrived. Now, let’s jump out into interstellar space (ignoring the planets). The light from the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, would get here 4½ years later. The light from Sirius would arrive 8.6 years later. Do you get the picture? One by one, the distant stars would wink on. And they would still be doing it today. Not what God had in mind. So, here is an example of God’s divine intervention into the laws of the natural universe. The light from the sun, moon, and stars was all visible on Day Four. (And spectral adjustments were obviously made.)

In conclusion

None of this will ever convince the atheists. That is not my plan. I wanted to reinforce Biblical truth using scientific concepts (while discrediting the atheists). The truths and theories in this article should be taught in schools alongside the unworkable theories of evolution—as an alternate view. And, most of all, every Christian should believe in the Biblical account of creation because our faith and hope of eternal salvation along with all the promises of God depend on complete and unquestioning faith in every part of the Bible.

For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. (Romans 3:3-4)

BOTTOM LINE?

We can never find God by examining His creation. In His supreme wisdom, He elected to reveal Himself to those who choose to seek Him using the basic seed of faith that God gave each one at birth. At the same time, He chose to hide his truths from them who seek the answers with an arrogant and agnostic attitude. His way is simple and straightforward.
